Introduction

Typhoon, Twister, and Tornado Back End are very similar and operationally equivalent in many areas. Furthermore, Tornado Front End has many of the features of Typhoon and you can operate both similarly. Tornado Front End has its own product guides, but for Typhoon, Twister, and Tornado Back End, we'll save duplication and lower the chance of errors by documenting all products together. Where applicable, refer to specialized sections for Twister and Tornado Back End that detail the differences from Typhoon

Typhoon

The Typhoon News Server is a general-purpose, high-performance, robust Usenet news server designed to manage large numbers of NNTP news readers. Typhoon is designed for high capacity, and have features that make it easy for companies to cost-effectively build and maintain large Usenet networks.

Typhoon provides advanced features like:

  • 100% availability

  • POST filters

  • Fine-grained control over feed content

  • Virtual Server capability

  • Server chaining

  • Powerful program-based authentication

Twister

Twister is Typhoon plus a few key differences:

  • Supports Dynamic, Per-user Bandwidth Throttling.

  • Web/HTTP support - Twister is a web server and contains a built-in XML parser to deliver dynamic server content via Twister Templates.

Tornado Back End

Tornado Back End is Twister plus a few key differences:

  • Designed to support Tornado Front End and all the features it supports.

  • While possible, It is not recommended to support readers with Tornado Back End while servicing several Tornado Front End servers.
